Problems When Installing Quick Connectors

    Why is my quick connect accessory leaking?
    The main reasons for the leakage of the quick connector are the damage of the O-ring, improper installation, corrosion of the pipeline or excessive torque on the pipeline. The quick coupling has a simple but powerful design. If the accessory leaks, the possibility of leakage is extremely small due to manufacturer defects or incorrect product design. Most of the leakage occurs because the parts of the accessory are damaged or the way the accessory is installed causes water to bypass the O-ring.
    1. Improper installation
    When pushing the quick connect fitting onto the pipeline, make sure that the pipeline is pushed far enough so that it depresses the O-ring and seals the joint. If the fitting is only pushed into the collet and no seal is formed, the water will be able to bypass the teeth of the collet and flow out of the fitting. When the pipe reaches the chuck, it does produce resistance. This pushback may make you think that you have pushed the tubing completely into the quick connect fitting, but may not have reached the O-ring.
    2. Uneven tubing
    In order to make the pipeline tightly sealed with the O-ring, the pipeline must have a clean, straight cut. If the mouth of the pipe is jagged or uneven, it will not form a watertight seal and will leak when water flows through the joint. If the pipe is cut too large, it may cut into the O-ring and make it impossible to seal. To achieve a cut flush with the O-ring, use a pipe cutter. These handheld devices use angled sharp blades to cut neatly through the tube. This tool is very suitable for making vertical square cuts so that the O-rings in the joint can be properly sealed without leakage. Although there are many types of plastic pipes available, the most common pipe used for quick connect fittings is LLDPE. LLDPE pipes (short for linear low-density polyethylene pipes) are compatible with all standard accessory sizes and are usually used with point-of-use drinking water systems (such as reverse osmosis or other equipment with insufficient sinks). LLDPE pipe is the most widely used pipe in the water filtration industry.
    3. Torque or pressure
    If the fitting is tightened or the fitting exerts excessive pressure at a too large angle, water may leak in the fitting. If you want to create a bend or corner in the pipe, the pipe will begin to replace the components of the fitting. This torque in the pipe will move the collet to the side and start pulling out the O-ring. At this position, the O-ring can no longer form a seal and it will start to leak. It is important to keep the inlet and outlet of the pipe as straight as possible.
    4. Damaged O-ring
    If the rubber O-ring is scratched, cracked or broken, it will not form a watertight seal. As mentioned earlier, O-rings can be damaged due to jagged pipes or improper installation. If the joint is pulled too hard to one side, it may compress and deform the O-ring. Certain chemicals in the water can also cause the O-ring to deteriorate. If the chloramine content in the water is high, over time, they will decompose the EDPM rubber material. Although not common, O-rings will spoil themselves after prolonged use and cause a small amount of leakage.
